What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans were free. Although President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier, many enslaved people in Texas remained unaware of their freedom until that day.

For thousands of African Americans, June 19 represented the fulfillment of a promise that had been delayed but not forgotten. The day became known as "Juneteenth," combining the words June and nineteenth, and is now observed across the United States as a day to honor freedom and a remembrance to the end of slavery.

How Juneteenth Is Celebrated

Across the United States, Juneteenth is celebrated through community gatherings, educational programs, cultural events, parades, music, and family reunions. Many celebrations focus on sharing history, honoring achievements, and fostering conversations about equality and civic engagement.

These events provide opportunities for people of all backgrounds to come together, learn, and recognize the significance of the holiday.

At BVstylez, we believe history is something you carry with you. Juneteenth reminds us of the importance of remembering the past, honoring the pursuit of freedom, and recognizing the courage that continues to inspire generations today.
