What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans were free. Although President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier, many enslaved people in Texas remained unaware of their freedom until that day.

For thousands of African Americans, June 19 represented the fulfillment of a promise that had been delayed but not forgotten. The day became known as "Juneteenth," combining the words June and nineteenth, and is now observed across the United States as a day to honor freedom and a remembrance to the end of slavery.
